Make a Wi-Fi QR code

How to

Let guests join your Wi-Fi by scanning a code instead of entering the network name and password.

Content type
Your contentWi-Fi content

Enter the network name exactly as it appears in your Wi-Fi settings, including spaces.

Choose the security type shown in your network settings. WPA/WPA2 Personal is recommended. WEP is outdated and insecure. Enterprise and WPA3-only networks are not supported.

Enter the exact network password. WPA/WPA2 accepts 8-63 standard keyboard characters or a 64-digit hexadecimal key. WEP accepts 5 or 13 standard keyboard characters, or a 10- or 26-digit hexadecimal key.

Anyone who scans this code may obtain the Wi-Fi credentials. Only share it with people you trust.

Advanced settings

Error correction helps a code remain readable if some of its data is damaged. M is a good choice for everyday use. Higher levels offer more recovery but make the code denser and leave less room for content. Percentages refer to recoverable code data, not the area you can cover. Always test the finished code.

How to create a Wi-Fi code

Let guests join your Wi-Fi by scanning a code instead of entering the network name and password.

  1. Enter the network name exactly as it appears in Wi-Fi settings.
  2. Choose the security type and enter the password, if needed.
  3. Select Hidden network if applicable, then generate the code.
  4. Test joining the network and share the code only with trusted guests.

What to enter

Network name (SSID)
Enter the exact network name, including spaces. Network names can contain up to 32 bytes; some characters use more than one byte.
Security
Choose WPA/WPA2 Personal, WEP or an open network. WEP is outdated and insecure. Enterprise and WPA3-only networks are not supported.
Wi-Fi password
Enter the exact password. WPA/WPA2 accepts 8-63 standard keyboard characters or a 64-digit hexadecimal key. WEP accepts 5 or 13 standard keyboard characters, or a 10- or 26-digit hexadecimal key. Open networks have no password.
Hidden network
Select this if your network does not appear in the usual list of available Wi-Fi networks.

Example

Network: Guest; security: WPA/WPA2 Personal; demonstration password: password123; hidden: no

Scanning your code

Joining Wi-Fi from a code depends on the device and scanner. Test the code on the network you plan to share.

Sharing and privacy

Anyone with this code can read the Wi-Fi password. The text summary hides it, but the QR image contains it. Show Wi-Fi credentials reveals the full contents.

Questions about Wi-Fi codes

Is the password encrypted?

No. Share the code only with people allowed to use the network.

Can I use an enterprise network?

Enterprise authentication is not supported. Use a personal WPA/WPA2, WEP or open network.

What happens if I choose Open?

The password is cleared because an open network does not use one. Switching back leaves the password field empty.
